People in the fitness community often argue about why fitness should be “science-based”, and not just use “what works”.
What many people don’t realize is that when you spend a month training, watching YouTube videos, taking advice from friends or gym strangers, and running your own trial-and-error process to see which exercises work best — you’re actually conducting a science experiment.
The Science Behind Training
That’s where professionals like exercise scientists and kinesiologists come in. These experts study how the body moves, how it adapts to different types of training, and how exercise can be optimized for performance and health.
Their research helps us understand why these approaches and types of stimuli lead to progress — not just that they do.
So next time someone argues against “science-based fitness,” ask them how they determined what worked for them — and how they would describe their supposedly “non-scientific” approach.
“An experiment, in the standard scientific sense of the term, is a procedure in which some object of study is subjected to interventions (manipulations) that aim at obtaining a predictable outcome or at least predictable aspects of the outcome.” — Hansson, 2016
What Makes Fitness “Science-Based”?
Being science-based doesn’t necessarily mean a method has been tested in hundreds of studies or published in journals.
It means it’s been structured thoughtfully, proven to work in some capacity, and has a logical reason for why it works.
I’d argue that it’s even hard to follow a program that isn’t evidence-based — because someone, somewhere, has already tested, refined, and deemed it good enough before passing it on.
However, that doesn’t mean every plan works for everyone. That’s the beauty of science — individual variation. What’s “perfect” for one person might not be right for you.
